Congenital Heart Disease

A Congenital Heart Disease (CHDs) is a imperfection in the structure of the heart or great vessels that is present at birth. Risk factors also include certain infections during pregnancy like rubella, use of certain medications or drugs like alcohol or tobacco, parents being closely related or poor nutritional status or obesity in the mother. A few CHDs may be diagnosed during pregnancy using a special kind of ultrasound called a fetal echocardiogram, which creates ultrasound pictures of the heart. Treatment for CHDs depends on the type and strength of the defect present. Some affected infants and children might need one or more surgeries to repair the heart.

Types of congenital heart disease-

  • Septal defects
  • Coarctation of the aorta
  • Pulmonary valve stenosis
  • Transposition of the great arteries
  • Underdeveloped heart
