Cardiovascular Diseases, Disorders and Surgeries

Cardiovascular Disease is a group of diseases and affecting your heart and blood vessels. These diseases are caused to affect one or many parts of your heart and/or blood vessels. Cardiovascular diseases are the main cause of death globally. Cardiovascular surgery can also referred to as cardiac surgery or heart surgery, describes any surgical procedure that involves the heart or the blood vessels that carry blood to and from the heart. These procedures are common with patients who have cardiovascular disease or have had a heart attack, stroke or blood clot-as well as individuals who are at high risk for developing these problems. The important behavioural risk factors of heart disease and stroke are unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, tobacco use and harmful use of alcohol.

There are many types of heart surgery-

  • Coronary artery bypasses grafting (CABG)
  • Heart valve repair or replacement
  • Insertion of a pacemaker or an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD)
  • Maze surgery
  • Aneurysm repair
  • Heart transplant
  • Insertion of a ventricular assist device (VAD) or total artificial heart (TAH)
